Laos originally known as Lan Xang, or the Land of Elephants, is known for its mountainous regions and landlocked country. Mekong River that flows the span of the country has supplied the land with important water for its agriculture. It has been used for a major means of transport and provided food and water for the masses for century. This made military expansion to the area difficult for the French, as they were as adaptable as the inhabitants that had known the countryside’s advantages for centuries.
Much of Laos' population was driven away due to communism in the 1970s. To this day there is a lack of infrastructure and it is only for the brave tourist. There are some amazing little towns with splendid scenery worth checking out.
