Turkmenistan has had political turmoil over the years, however has good tourism potential with subtropical desert climate with hot summers. Ashgabat, the capital barely survived an earthquake in 1948 and was rebuilt a modern city designed with heaps of monuments and statues in salute to there then current leader, Niyazov, in a way similar to other communist states.
Turkmenistan part of the ancient silk roads has Dekhistan which some consider the lost city for these old routes. There are other ruins around the countryside including the ancient Persian town, Merv which has historical significance. Hopefully things are improving it may become a better tourist attraction.
